Welcome to Trust in Education (TiED), a department of the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust dedicated to connecting our community to its land and history through educational programming and engagement!
KHS students in Gulf of Maine Studies course presenting at the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust on benthic communities, their importance, and existing threats to their health. In its inaugural year, the KHS and UNE Gulf of Maine Studies students studied habitats in the Gulf of Maine, alternative energy, and researched methods to get Goat Island Light off the grid and onto “green” energy.
What does TiED do?
TiED is a variety of things! From field trips on Trust properties and classroom visits to evening talk series and adult programs, TiED works with RSU 21 and other local partners to empower hands-on environmental learning for all ages.
Where is TiED in RSU 21?
Since 2008, Trust in Education has worked throughout RSU 21 elementary schools, partnering with teachers and principals, to help fill the gaps in science and social studies education. By asking teachers what topics they are looking to enhance student learning in, TiED is able to create complimentary field trips across Trust owned properties that hit national learning standards and re-enforce classroom lessons. TiED covers everything from the five senses to alternative energy in science, along with colonial history to economics in social studies with real life examples and stories from Kennebunkport’s own history.
At the high school and university level, TiED has partnered with Kennebunk High School, the University of New England, and Gulf of Maine Institute to offer a Gulf of Maine Studies course for college credit. This course focuses on changes in the Gulf climate, with each year built around a course-wide research project.
