We hope you’re enjoying your outdoor adventures!
Some adventures need a little background material, extra content, or videos to enhance them though. Virtual programs can also be found on our Facebook and Instagram Series.

You can learn what animals are on the land near you without ever seeing them by looking for tracks. Before going out with your tracking guide, watch the YouTube video to learn more about being an Animal Detective!
Hidden Habitats (Forests & Birds)
Have you ever noticed that when we talk about a habitat we talk about all the big things that we see? The plants and animals, dirt and water. But what about all of the things that you might not see right away? How about the FBI? (No, not that FBI!) The Fungus, Bacteria, and Insects (FBI) of the Forest!
Birds and Beaks (Forests & Birds)
Every bird’s beak is made special for the kind of food that they eat! Some are long and narrow to get bugs from trees and others are short and stout to peck at the ground.
Download and play the bird beak game, then go explore with your binoculars to see what kinds of birds and beaks you can find!

Build a pirate ship (courtesy of k’port parks & rec) (Coastal & Pirates)
What better way to get into the pirate spirit than build your own pirate ship! You can use cardboard from a shipping box or cereal box and fabric from an old t-shirt to make the ship uniquely YOU. Don’t forget to name the ship when you’re done!
Archaeology “Digging Into History” (Time travel & Landscapes)
Finding a piece of the past can be such an excitement, especially when it’s as old as this canoe! Dating to 1280-1380 AD, this birch dug out canoe is the oldest one found yet in Maine and it’s been right here in Cape Porpoise.
Explore more photos below! Have you ever dug something up about of the ground that looked man-made? Practice exploring your own backyard for buried objects, and then head on over to a lake, river, or the ocean and spend your time carefully combing over the ground to see what the changing land can reveal to you. You may be surprised to see what you find! Areas by the water and the best place to search because the water is constantly covering and uncovering new artifacts.
