Our New Lighthouse Keepers

Presented by Nick Lewia, Goat Island Lighthouse Keeper

Dear Friends and Supporters,

It is with immense gratitude and excitement that my family and I step into the role of Head Lighthouse Keepers of Goat Island Light. This opportunity is truly a dream come true—one that we do not take for granted. We are honored to follow in the footsteps of Scott and Karen Dombrowski, whose unwavering dedication over the past 30+ years has made Goat Island the beloved landmark it is today. Their tireless work, passion, and love for this island have left an indelible mark, not only on the lighthouse itself but on all who have had the privilege of visiting. Their commitment to preservation and education has inspired countless individuals, including myself. On behalf of my family and the entire Goat Island community, we extend our deepest gratitude to Scott and Karen for their years of selfless service. We hope to honor their legacy by continuing the work they so wholeheartedly poured into this island.

Our vision for Goat Island is rooted in communication, transparency, and community. We are implementing an online portal to help streamline coordination between the Keepers Apprentices and the board, ensuring that projects, schedules, inventory, fundraising efforts, and outreach initiatives are efficiently managed and accessible to all involved. This level of organization will allow us to focus on what truly matters; keeping Goat Island safe, welcoming, and thriving for generations to come.

Safety remains one of our highest priorities, both for our guests and for our keepers. We have already begun working on several initiatives, including informative safety signage at the docks and lighthouse, as well as a capital project to construct a safer walkway and retaining wall around the lighthouse. Additionally, we are addressing key issues in the keepers’ quarters, including water damage, mold, and rodent concerns, while also re-lining the cisterns, the island’s sole source of freshwater. These are just a few of the many projects we are committed to tackling to ensure the well-being of all who visit and care for Goat Island.

Beyond the work itself, Goat Island is a place of deep personal significance to my family. My 10 year-old son has spent the last four years embracing the responsibilities of island life, eagerly greeting guests, helping them tie up at the dock, and giving tours with immense pride. Watching him develop confidence, a strong work ethic, and a deep appreciation for this island has been one of the greatest gifts of this journey. Goat Island is more than just a lighthouse, it is a place that shapes those who care for it, instilling a love of history, stewardship, and community.

As we look ahead, we are filled with hope and excitement for the future of Goat Island. We envision a place where history is preserved, where guests continue to experience its beauty and significance, and where new generations of keepers carry on the tradition of care and dedication. This island has inspired so many before us, and it will continue to do so for years to come. Together, we will honor its past, embrace its present, and build a bright future for Goat Island Light.

Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and shared love for this special place. We cannot wait to embark on this journey with all of you by our side.

With gratitude,
The Lewia Family
