Our Headquarters: History and Legacy

After nearly 30 years of board meetings spent sitting on milk crates in the cramped office above Bradbury’s Market or shivering in the unheated barn across from Steve Emmon’s house, KCT was ready for a permanent home. Thanks to Emmons’ generous donation of land and financial support, the Trust could finally envision a headquarters of its own; a place for staff and volunteers to work and gather, a permanent home for nearly three decades of records and organizational history, and a welcoming space for community events and educational programs. By 2004, the KCT was moved into the newly constructed and stunningly beautiful headquarters building next to the homestead of Steve and Natalie Emmons, overlooking the fields along the banks of the Batson River.
More than two decades later, the headquarters continues to fulfill that vision. It is where our staff and interns work each day, where volunteers gather and projects take shape, and where meetings, educational programs, and community events bring people together. It is also a welcoming place for visitors exploring the preserve and its trails. What began as a much-needed permanent home for a growing organization has become the heart of KCT: a place where the work of the Trust and the community it serves come together.
Visiting our Headquarters
We encourage you to visit and explore the Emmons Preserve in every season. Hike the trails in the warmer months or snowshoe them in winter, follow the Batson River, wander through the Labyrinth, discover something new along the Learning Trail, or simply enjoy a picnic on our deck. And while you’re here, come inside and say hello!
During normal business hours, our headquarters is open to the public. Visitors are welcome to use the restrooms, refill a water bottle, warm up or cool off, pick up a trail map, or stop in to learn more about KCT and our preserves.
Because our work often takes us out into the field and to properties throughout Kennebunkport, staff may not always be on site during business hours. If you are planning a visit and would like to speak with a staff member or need assistance, we recommend calling ahead to make sure someone will be here to greet you. Our number is 207-967-3465
Our headquarters is typically closed on weekends, when staff are not regularly on site, and the building may also be reserved for a private event. If you arrive and a private event is taking place, we ask that you respect the event and make other arrangements for restroom facilities. The preserve and trails remain open for you to enjoy.
