While at Charles M. Bradbury’s home in Cape Porpoise for the annual meeting of Spanish American War veterans, the Painchaud’s band and the entire party “formed in line under the direction of Marshal James J. Momna and marched to the home of Hon. Justin M. Leavitt and paid a glowing tribute to the only surviving member of the G.A.R. in that town. Mr. Leavitt was taken by surprise at the serenade and sincerely thanked each and every member of the party for their thoughtfulness.”

Justin M Leavitt was born: April 7,1846 Buxton, Maine, and died: April 30,1931, Cape Porpoise Maine. He served in the First Maine Heavy Artillery, Company I, and was wounded in the Battle of Spotsylvania on May 19, 1864. He was discharged from service on Apr. 4, 1865. He was later register of deeds for York County, Me., and later ran a hotel with his wife, Ella S. Leavitt, named Stone Haven in Cape Porpoise, Me.
