KCT Thought of the Week, October 30, 2009

On Tuesday, November 3rd, voters will go to cast their ballots for a variety of items.  Question 5 will ask you to approve a contract zone for Goat Island Lighthouse.  We urge you to vote in favor.  When the K.C.T. received Goat Island we were charged with the responsibility of choosing an era in time towards which all repairs would lead.  The committee given that task chose the mid-1950's, a period when the lighthouse was beautiful, distinct, contained all of it's historical features and had electricity.  We have made many significant improvements already to the island but can not move ahead with the bell tower, walkway or utility building under current zoning.  In order to continue, a special contract zone only for Goat Island needs to exist.  Any construction will still be subject to a full review by the planning board and a number of agencies.  Also, funding for the project will not interfere with the Trust's primary mission to protect open parcels of land.  We will look for special donors with a love of the island and for grants with a specific interest in seeing it restored to its former glory.  Thanks for your support and please urge your friends and neighbors to get out and vote!

72% of Kennebunkport's registered voters went to the polls.  The vote was: 1636 yes, 267 no and 53 left blank.  Thank You!
