KCT Thought of the Week: “It was on Stage Island just across from the main shore that the early historical interest of this locality centered, for there was the scene of the first settlement of Cape Porpoise or Cape Porpus as it was termed, a settlement probably older than the famed colony of Pilgrims in Massachusetts. It consisted mainly of fishermen, for here was a good place to catch fish and dry them on the lattice-like stages, hence the name given to the island.” ~ Herbert G. Jones in “The King’s Highway from Portland to Kittery” c. 1953
