Our Mission & You

For nearly 50 years the Trust has been working to set aside those special places that define the beauty and character of our community. Those places now include all but one of the islands of Cape Porpoise, Goat Island Lighthouse, three downtown park areas, lots at Goose Rocks Beach, and 24 miles of trails on our 2k+ preserved acres. With a robust educational program, fundraising, events, and oversight, it’s easy to see why volunteers are crucial to our organization’s operations. They are the folks whose dedicated and loving care keeps our properties well maintained and accessible.

As more and more people discover the enjoyment of exploring our town’s landscape, it’s more important than ever to keep them well maintained. It’s more important than ever to keep our islands and forests healthy. That’s why the Trust is looking for those who are willing to “adopt” a section of trail, an island, or another holding that’s meaningful to them. Could that be you? Perhaps it’s a place you regularly go. When it fits your schedule, could you make sure all is well there? Could you let us know if there’s a problem, like a downed tree or broken bridge? Could yours be the watchful eye and helping hands that bring joy to others as they discover nature? If so, let us know! We’re always looking for dedicated individuals to join our team. It’s fun and rewarding, and as we’ve always said, together we can do great things.

What could adopting a property look like?

  • Jotting down the location of downed trees on your daily morning property stroll with your dog.

  • Visiting your favorite island once a month and picking up trash.

  • Taking a pair of clippers out every few weeks and cutting back the overgrowth along your favorite trail.

  • Giving Headquarters a call about maintenance needs on remote parts of a preserve.

  • Throwing extra sticks and tree litter back off the trail into the woods as you walk around your favorite spot.

  • And more!
