Trail Stewardship

Presented by Bob Collins, co-leader of the Trail Stewards

Our dedicated dedicated trail team is led by Bob Collins, Kate Adams, and Bud Danis who have been sharing the leadership of the trial crew.

2024 was a very busy year for the Trail Stewards. Our projects included major repairs and additions to all the boardwalks on the Tyler Brook Loop, rebuilding of the bridge on the Trolly Trail in Smith Preserve and improving the culvert at the Tyler Brook trail head near the parking on Rt 9. In addition to these projects, we continued the routine maintenance of clearing downed trees, trimming back overgrowth along the trails and maintaining our existing boardwalks. We also established a team of trail Adopters to monitor the trails and report back to the stewards any trail issues that needed addressing.  We still need adopters for a few spots in the Smith Preserve, if you are interested please reach out to volunteer@kporttrust.org!

The biggest project of the year was the launch of a new smartphone app to collect maintenance issues from anyone using the trail system and using the app to schedule trail work. This has been an ongoing project and we hope to have more trail users have access soon.

We’d also like to make note of our biggest project for 2023, which was rebuilding boardwalks and building a new bridge/boardwalk to skirt the beaver dam at the head of Tyler Brook. It’s been an incredibly successful project providing a place for the beavers to do what beavers do best without creating a nuisance for any nearby homes or roads.

And of course, to all those who labor anomalously to take care of trail issues as they see them. A great big thank you to you all.

We encourage anyone who would like to be involved in trail stewardship to please fill out our volunteer form.
