Island Stewardship
Presented by Carol Morris, Co-lead of the Island Stewards
The Kennebunkport Conservation Trust Island Stewards keep our Cape Porpoise islands welcoming to campers and day trippers.
A visit to any one of the Cape Porpoise islands is like a trip back in time. Spectacular shifting ocean colors, rampant wildflowers, untouched cobblestone beaches, clear water, ospreys and terns. And on Trott, Vaughn and Cape, secluded wooded or meadow campsites. No buildings or roads. Just the sounds of water, birds, and wind. Campers and day trippers describe their experiences there in magical terms. And many comment that they came to the island as children and are thrilled to see it unchanged for their own children and grandchildren.
Volunteer island stewards travel by boat to these islands May to September to keep campsites trimmed back and repair fire rings as needed. We pick up the occasional trash, but most drifts in from boats: visitors are incredibly respectful of these islands. They are a gift.
Please visit www.kctislands.org to find out more and please help us keep these islands wild. If you are interesting in becoming an island steward, please fill out our volunteer form.
