Milk Island as seen from Goat Island Light in 1984

“Milk Island was between Goat Island and Pinkham’s Wharf. It was owned by Capt. John Perkins and during the summer of 1811 his father and mother (Thomas Perkins Esq.) came from their farm at the Mills and spent July and August. On August 2, 1811, their 10th and youngest son, Christopher Gore Perkins, was born. On that same day, Eliza, daughter of John Carr and Elizabeth (Seavey) Hutchins, was born at Skipper Joe’s Harbor. The squire and family returned to their farm in September.

On Milk Island was a two-story house, a store, wharf and fish flakes. The buildings were sold in 1835, and the ledge of fine granite (which was quarried away). After this the sand and gravel soon washed away and the island is now covered by every tide.” Mrs. Clement S. Perkins in “Notes on History of Cape Porpoise and its Houses”
