April 6 - Hidden habitats

AW_life_on_land_colour_ejls2p.jpg

There are so many habitats in the world with so many plants and animals! But what about the things we often don’t see?

Have you ever noticed that when we talk about habitats, we talk about the obvious animals that we can see easily? Birds, rabbits, people etc... They are cool for sure. But there is a whole world of stuff that we don’t see unless we are looking for it.

Nature has no recycling bin, therefor it has to take care of all its trash. Can you imagine if a tree fell down and it just stayed there? Our woods would be filled with all sorts of piled up dead plants, trees, and animals... but its not!

Why? Because of the Forest FBI! No, it’s not a secret agency of trees... it is Fungus, Bacteria and Insects. They may not be the most glamorous woodland creatures, but they are useful! Today you are going to learn some pretty cool facts about the Forest FBI. So let’s go!

Print out the sphere cards from each page, shuffle them up, and lay them out face down on a flat surface. Flip each card over taking turns one by one and identify which sphere the picture belongs to! Make piles of each sphere and when you’re all done, check your answers with the digital sheet. How did you do?

Remember! As you’re looking at all of the wildflowers, it’s best to leave them where you find them. Instead of picking the flowers, take a picture! See how creative your images can be, or draw them in your nature journal.

After you’ve explored some ways that animals can make changes to stay warm or cool off, check out this blubber experiment! What would it be like if YOU had blubber?
